We feature two international HR freelancers, Rani D. and Gwendoline C., for a double interview. They are in a unique position: both of them are working on different projects for the same global, Paris-based company.

Why did you decide to become an HR freelancer?

RANI: I need autonomy in my professional life. Moreover, freelancing is the best way to work on so many different, interesting projects. This time for example, I focus on Global Learning and Development, which is a broad and rewarding topic. I have responsibilities on both a strategic and a pragmatic level. Thirdly, I can see the direct impact of my work. For example, by bringing my expertise to the Learning & Development function, we have improved the value the company is getting from vendors, as we become more savvy as to what "great" looks like. I have saved the company over € 200K by being involved in vendor assessments and negotiations and by stopping the purchase of unnecessary content.

GWENDOLINE: A major change in my private life initiated refl ections on my career aspirations. Seen as I had built a solid international background in various key HR domains, I decided to focus much more on leveraging my expertise and sharing my experiences with others. One key driver was to satisfy my creative impulse. Working as an independent HR Consultant allows me to do just that. I have been working on 2 strategic projects in the Global Talent Management domain. One focussed on setting up the function of the Chief Talent Offi cer, the other one is oriented towards creating efficiencies in people processes and operationalizing a number of people development principles.
