Yesterday, we welcomed learnatic Sofie Willox to our office boat in Ghent. Sofie is a certified Lego Serious Play facilitator and she has ‘a degree in playing with Legos’. She shared her insights on the Lego Serious Play methodology with our HR freelance community.

Lego Serious Play is based on the hand-brain connection and was developed by the university of Lausanne. Sofie challenged the idea that play & work do not go together, a big misconception.

Lego Serious Play is especially useful in situations

  • where there is no ready-made solution to a problem,
  • when multiple stakeholders are involved,
  • when you want to map different perspectives
  • when you want to make sure every party involved has a voice

The starting point is a specific challenge to which every participant has to build an individual answer, using identical sets of Lego blocks. Then every participant shares his or her answer with the rest of the group and the group then reflects on each proposition, without interpreting or judging.

During our monthly HRbuilders workshop we aimed to find an answer to the following question using this Lego Serious Play methodology: What does the future of L & D look like in companies and what is HR’s role in the future of learning?  Finding an answer to the latter question will require an extra workshop we think :-)

A big thank you to Sofie and all fellow builders!
